Bangalore is the capital of the southern state of Karnataka. It is one of the growing economies of India. The fastest growing software industry has earned it the name of Silicon Valley of India. Being a metropolitan city of India, transportation in Bangalore is very well developed. The city of Bangalore is served by an international airport which is one of the busiest in the country. The HAL Airport of Bangalore is India's fourth busiest one handling nearly 7.5 million passengers per year. The HAL Airport provides major air transportation in Bangalore operating as both domestic and international airport.
The airport has regular services to all the major cities of India and abroad. The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited owns the airport unlike other airports in the country which are owned by the Airports Authority of India.
The Bangalore Airport is also used to test and develop fighter aircraft for the Indian Air Force. Many domestic airlines such as SpiceJet and Kingfisher Airlines operate in the city. Besides, Jet Airways and Go Air have also started operating from the city. This has led to congestion problems at the airport. A new 4,500 acre of Bangalore International Airport is coming up which is being constructed in the outskirts of Bangalore, around 30 kilometers from the city in Devanahalli to ease out the current traffic congestion. It has been targeted to be inaugurated in April 2008. The new airport will have two runways keeping in mind 11 million passengers per year. Kingfisher Airlines and Air Deccan have their headquarters in Bangalore.
The Indian Railways connects Bangalore to the rest of the country. The Rajdhani Express runs between Bangalore and New Delhi. Bangalore is also well connected to Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad, as well as other major cities in Karnataka. A new intra city metro rail transport system in Bangalore was is under construction. This metro rail system is called Namma Metro. It is expected to be completed in 2011. The metro rail will cover a distance of 33 kilometer comprising of both elevated and underground rail network. The system has 32 stations in Phase I and more will be added in Phase II.
Transportation in Bangalore inside the city is mainly based on buses, taxis and auto-rickshaws ply from one part of the city to the other. The bus service is very convenient in Bangalore. The most popular for of transport being the three-wheeled auto rickshaws popularly called autos.

They are metered with a carrying capacity of maximum three people. The taxi service in the city is more expensive the taxis are also metered and has a carrying capacity of maximum four people. Taxi service is operated by various taxi operators and owners commonly known as CITI taxi.
Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) operates the buses in and around the Bangalore City. Buses are the best means of public transportation in Bangalore. The buses are available throughout the city and connect every corner of the city. The commuters can buy tickets after boarding these buses. Bus pass are issued by BMTC to frequent users. Red colored air conditioned Volvo buses are run by BMTC on major routes.
